Involvement in student activities not an excuse to excel academically

By Hakim Mahari (IIUM Today)

GOMBAK, 15 March 2022: Despite holding big responsibility at both the kuliyyah and university levels, Ahmad Irham Dollah has successfully graduated from Kulliyyah of Engineering with Best Overall Student award.

Irham received the award at sixth session of the 36th Convocation at ICC Hall, Gombak this morning for his excellent performance in both academic and co-curricular involvement during the four years of his study.

He was the president of the highest student body at IIUM, the Student Representative Council from 2018 to 2019, and was also the former president of Engineering Students’ Society (ENGINIUS) in 2017.

Kelantan-born, Irham was from the Department of Electronics – Computer and Information. He was an active student during his degree years where he was involved in student society from his first year.

“Being an active student required you to be extra careful with time management. While others are in a deep sleep, you might spend your night attending meeting, after that you need to prepare for your quiz tomorrow.

“That is the hardest sacrifice I have made which not all students have to go through that in the four years of their study in the university,” Irham told IIUMToday.

Asked about how he manage to balance between academic and co-curricular activities, he admitted that it is quite impossible for most students to do that.

“We just go with the flow and put our best in both academic and co-curricular activities. If there is time we repeat and recover the topics we missed to make sure we are on the right track with the others,” Irham said.

Unlike other graduates who celebrated their convocation with their beloved parents, Irham did not have the opportunity to be with his parents due to their health reason.

“My parents just completed their quarantine as they tested positive for COVID-19 and were looking at their risk as elderly, so we decided to not bring them along even though they were excited to come.

Irham currently works as an Executive Officer at CIMB. He dedicated the award he received today to his parents.***
